Our trip began with a loooooonnnnnnng drive. Olivia did pretty well even though we took her paci away just days before our trip. She only asked for it one time toward then end of the trip when she was very tired of riding. (Just a quick note--taking away the beloved pa pa was much easier than I thought it would be. She has only asked for it twice since it "broke".)
We stopped in Creswell, NC to visit Somerset Plantation. Bart had tried to find this on a previous trip to the Outer Banks, but gave up before he found it so he was determined to find it this time. It was extremely hot so we did not stay long, but we got to see the main house, some of the slaves quarters, and Olivia got to see the goats. (Just as a side note--this place is out in the middle of know where and according to Bart, "This must be where the Lost Colony wound up!")
The best decision we made for the trip was when we sacrificed the space in the back of our car to pack our Step 2 Wagon for the kids to ride in. We were 3 blocks back from the beach so we would strap Olivia and Lucas in the wagon and all the toys, chairs, coolers, etc. in a beach cart. Olivia loved the water and playing in the sand. We were out on the beach by 9 or so every morning then back around lunch time for baths, lunch, and nap time.
Olivia and Lucas played so well together. In the evenings they read books, played with the lighthouse figurines at the cottage, watched Wiggles on Uncle Andrew's computer, and were just darn cute.
Olivia is facinated with her Granddaddy's reading glasses. Doesn't she look smart?
Mom, Lindsey, Lucas, Olivia, and I walked into Duck one evening and stopped by a shop for smoothies. Here Olivia is enjoying her first mango smoothie.
We thought the kids would enjoy the aquarium so we went Tuesday afternoon. The kids loved the big tank with all the fish. Here they are under the watchful eye of their big cousin Lane.
They also took a ride on an alligator.
And got to touch sting rays, starfish, sea urchins, etc. in the touch tank. A sting ray swam right by Olivia while she was playing in the water. It surprised her a little.
That same evening after eating dinner out, Bart, Mom, Olivia, and I decided to drive up to the Currituck Lighthouse and take a chance at seeing some of the wild horse. We didn't see any horses, but we got some great views of the lighthouse.
This is a picture of the house we stayed in...just kidding. This is the Whalehead Club which is right next to the lighthouse.
We spent every day on the beach except for Thursday when we drove down to the end of the Outer Banks and got on the ferry for a trip to Ocracoke. The boat ride was the coolest part of the trip. It was a bazillion degrees that day (actually I think it topped out around 98) and everything is outside and the restaurants are mostly open air! Ugh! Bart, Olivia, my parents and I went, but Lucas, Lindsey, & Andrew stayed at the cottage since Lucas had what the urgent care doc said was sun poisoning.
